I think it's a great idea, because young people are growing up in a culture of not knowing what it's like to pay for music and that has to stop. If we want music to keep going forward, writers have to be paid.

The creative industries are often taken for granted, but what would life be like without them? It is vitally important that creators are paid fairly for the use of their work - it's their job! Without fair royalty payments for use of music, we will inevitably slip further into a culture that de-values creative arts and simultaneously into a situation where artists can less and less rely on their art form to earn a living, and hence quality of output will inevitably fall. Pay fair!!

I think it’s an outrage that YouTube won’t pay a small royalty for airing a video. The amount of viewing figures they receive and the advertising they are now able to use makes this a disgrace.

Fair play to songwriters...we do all the hard work and should receive the recognition both artistically and financially. In the commercial world of entertainment our input of originality is paramount..give credit where credit is due.

What most people fail to realise is that song writers put a lot of their heart, soul and hard work into their music. This should be rewarded accordingly. From conception to completion, there is a lot of effort and polishing that goes into a piece.

If YouTube paid songwriters their Royalties, they would benefit from more videos, the song writers would get some payment and the fans would get the music they love. It would then be a win-win situation for everyone.

Life is hard enough for a musician without them having to lose the rights and legal payment for their own songs- especially when it's being denied by multi-million pound companies! If these companies want to use new and fresh music, they should have to pay for it! Why are musicians in 2009 still being made to give their work away for free?

YouTube is a great site, and do a great service for musicians and songwriters, but it's only fair that those writer- performers should receive some form of royalty for the use of their work. I hope both sides reach agreement, because it would be mutually beneficial to do so.

If people value music and want to see the art form continue then artists need to be paid what they're due. Otherwise the smaller and developing acts are really gonna struggle, we'll be left with the giants only, just the arena bands....no one want to see that!

The problem is as always generating enough interest to drive traffic to your online presence. If major artists with expensive marketing and promotion only make a fraction of sales then what hope for the rest of us. In reality nothings changed for the majority of musicians.

Sites like YouTube rely on original content for their existence, perhaps they should think more carefully about this and invest in the creators of music.
